Description

In the early ’90s, filmmaker Richard Stanley made a name for himself with a pair of smart and stylish sci-fi thrillers, Hardware and Dust Devil. He parlayed that success into his dream project: an adaptation of H.G. Wells’ The Island of Dr Moreau. That’s when the trouble started. Unlike the also excellent Jodorowsky’s Dune, everyone involved in this debacle—from production assistants to producers to studio executives—are alive and kicking and all too eager to tell their side of the story. And the story they have to tell? It paints a picture of the most ludicrously doomed and contentious film shoot in the history of planet Earth and makes Apocalypse Now look like Love, Actually. It’s the sort of movie where a director could get fired from his own film, hide out in the jungle, and then get hired as an extra in his own movie—not that that happened, of course. Mike Keegan
