This holiday season, We Really Like Her! co-hosts Emily Gagne and Danita Steinberg invite you to a screening of Greta Gerwig's gift of a solo directorial debut, Lady Bird. Co-presented with Kadija Osman and Olivia Howell of Dial M for Movies podcast.
Starring Gerwig muse Saoirse Ronan (seen also in previous WRLH! fave Little Women), Lady Bird follows the titular character as she awkwardly navigates her senior year of high school in Sacramento, California, bristling against her equally stubborn mother (a brilliantly cast Laurie Metcalf recalling her Roseanne days) at every turn. At a brisk 94 minutes, the "semi-autobiographical" film manages to cover so many early lower middle-class white girl milestones including misguided crushes (cue Timothée Chalamet and Lucas Hedges), petty fights with your best friend (see: Beanie Feldstein as Julie), college application anxiety, and crises of faith. And it does it all with a bittersweet sense of humour that is as hard to resist as a catchy, yet problematic late '90s rock song ("Crash into me...").
While not as financially or artistically epic a Barbie or Little Women, Lady Bird remains effortlessly emotionally resonant nearly 10 years after its release. Don't miss your chance to revisit it on the big screen before Gerwig's new film, the latest entry in the Chronicles of Narnia universe, hits theatres in the new year.
We Really Like Her! is Toronto’s only monthly screening series celebrating Women in Film. It is generously sponsored by Hollywood Suite and Letterboxd.
