A Tibetan teenager travels from Minneapolis to India to compete in a most unlikely beauty pageant. Long separated from their ancient homeland, Tibet’s exile community struggles to maintain a sense of tradition in the face of modernity, emblematic in the contradictions of the Miss Tibet pageant. While its suave organizer insists that he offers young Tibetans a chance to immerse themselves in their culture and language, critics take issue with the event’s decidedly un-Tibetan focus on outer beauty, replete with bikinis and catwalks. -Doc NYC

With a population of about 27 million people - more than half living on less than $2 per day - Nepal is one of the poorest nations in the world. Many Nepalese women don't have the opportunity to go to school and believe that they won't be able to achieve anything. Their illiteracy profoundly impacts their self-esteem, their ability to achieve, and their relationships. Chuna Devi Pangeni couldn't correspond with her husand who worked abroad, or help her mother who was ill with cancer. Through the READ Center, Chuna has learned to read and is now helping women in her community to become literate.
