50th Anniversary / New 4K Restoration
50 years ago, five teenagers on a weekend getaway in the Texas countryside fell prey to a butcher in a mask made of human skin and his cannibalistic family and horror cinema would never be the same. Violent, aggressive, and shockingly realistic, director Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre terrified audiences in a way never thought possible when it was unleashed on a politically and socially tumultuous America in 1974. Facing a storm of controversy, censorship, and outcry throughout its troubled release, this masterpiece of horror has stood the test of time to become a landmark motion picture and cultural milestone.
Coral Gables Art Cinema is thrilled to present a program of films sure to enhance any cinephile's October moviegoing experience. We wanted to offer a selection that is all-encompassing—something for everyone.
First, we showcase the 4K restoration of Cure, the Japanese horror-thriller by the esteemed Kiyoshi Kurosawa. What begins as a procedural detective story soon spirals into something far more disturbing. Cure is a hypnotic film that will leave haunting images in your mind long after it ends—possibly along with an ulcer.
Next, we feature John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness, which we believe is just as great as his classics Halloween and The Thing. The film follows Sam Neill as an insurance investigator searching for a famous author who has gone missing, blending fun with demented horror in unforgettable ways.
Following that is Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the iconic slasher that has stood the test of time. The story follows a group of young friends who make an ill-fated detour into the deadliest day of their lives. This October marks the 50th anniversary of its original release—experience the blood, sweat, and many, many tears in a stunning 4K restoration.
Next, we celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Sixth Sense, the now-iconic film about a man who meets a boy who can see dead people. Featuring outstanding performances from both children and adults, this movie marked the breakout of M. Night Shyamalan, now a staple in the thriller genre. Don’t miss the chance to revisit the film that terrified audiences—and likely scared your parents for years after its release!
Lastly, there is Andrzej Zulawski's cult horror masterpiece Possession, also playing in a 4K restoration, on Halloween. Starring Sam Neill and Isabelle Adjani, the film tells the story of a wife who suddenly abandons her family, leaving her husband determined to uncover the truth—though what he finds may be beyond his ability to cope. You will see why directors like Ari Aster, Nicolas Winding Refn, and Richard Stanley have cited this film as one of their favorites.
Sit back, relax, and enjoy this Halloween collection, which invites you to set aside the usual and embrace the diverse world of horror.
