With large doses of humor and social realism, Yerlan Nurmukhambetov’s debut feature—winner of the New Current Award at the Busan International Film Festival—is a one-of-a-kind portrait of ordinary life in southern Kazakhstan. Walnut Tree tells the story of Gabit and Aisulu, two people in love who must define their own journey of courtship, marriage and family against a rich background of tradition and culture. Nurmukhambetov draws from his own experiences of growing up in a small village, blending satire with an open-hearted attitude toward human imperfection and the simple pleasures of life.
