Matteo Garrone’s surreal, star-studded fairy tale is a unique and rapturous cinematic ride. Loosely interpreted from the celebrated tales of 16th century Neapolitan poet and scholar Giambattista Basile, Garrone overlaps the bizarre stories of three neighboring kingdoms—the first of a king and queen (John C. Reilly and Salma Hayek) who must slay and steal the heart of a lake monster in order to have a child; the second ruled by a fornicating libertine (Vincent Cassel) who becomes obsessed with the singing voice; and lastly, King of Altomonte who nurtures a flea into a giant monstrous pet.
