Screening with short film Un Latino en MN: Edgar Galvan.

Aged Don Alejandro’s (Rafael Velez) Panamerican Machinery is a company whose ship has long set sail. Once a powerhouse in the manufacture of industrial machinery for a developing hemisphere, the ailing behemoth has withered to a grim space run by a crew of tired employees going through their daily motions. But when the company patriarch unexpectedly dies, the staff is suddenly rallied by accountant/company motivational guru Jesus Carlos (Javier Zaragoza) to keep the operation running at all costs: sealing itself off from the outside world and suspending time in order to bring the debilitated company back to life. Soon the strain of maintaining an ad hoc society explodes as true selves are revealed, petty grievances erupt and long buried secrets emerge in this funny, savage and unforgettable Mexican satire.

Winner of the Mezcal Award for Best Mexican Film at the Guadalajara International Film Festival, the debut feature from writer/director Joaquin del Paso pays homage to the classic social satires of the 1970s though with a distinctly modern twist. Specific enough to openly call out the machinations of a deeply dysfunctional Mexican political structure yet universal enough to be anywhere that industrialization has yet to keep its promise, PANAMERICAN MACHINERY takes aim at all the right targets to devastating effect.
