Description

<< Return to All Films | Sinopsis en Español

Relocated from his beloved rural farm due to Colombia’s long running guerilla war, 60 year-old Turco now scrapes together an existence in the urban slums of Cali, raising his troubled son Yosner, a performer with a local street dance crew, and dreaming of one day returning to his cherished homestead. His gaunt frame and creased face shaped by years of toil, Turco’s fortunes take a turn for the worse when Yosner is killed in a street dispute, straining Turco’s already precarious financial situation and deferring his dream of returning home. Wracked with grief and unable to come up with enough money to properly bury his son, the elder sets out to understand his Yosner’s world and reconcile the one he was forced to leave behind, coming to a realization on his true place within the warm embrace of Cali’s rich, vibrant Afro-Colombian community.

Filmed in crisp black and white, this latest effort from Colombia’s acclaimed Contravia Films is first narrative feature from documentary and experimental filmmakers Angela Osorio Rojas & Santiago Lozano Alvarez. Far from a grim recounting of the struggles of one Colombia’s 7 million internally displaced, SIEMBRA is often joyous testament to the survival of that country’s rural cultures uprooted and replanted in urban soil. Alive with music and dance-including a stunning sequence set in a memorial service-SIEMBRA is an immersive experience you won’t soon forget.
