Arrested after a violent gas station robbery, troubled Santiago youth Tano (Andrew Bargsted) is remanded to the custody of his father, Javier (Francisco Pérez-Bannen), an auto mechanic living in the small mountain community of Wallmapu. Soon the wayward teen befriends shy, awkward Cheo (Eliseo Fernández), whose indigenous Mapuche community fights against the displacement and destruction wrought by a massive local pulp mill. The connection between the two boys quickly deepens against the pressures of schoolyard cruelty and the troubled home lives of each, forcing a reckoning between each young man and the world around him in this extraordinary debut feature from writer/director Claudia Huaiquimilla.
Following up her multiple-award winning short San Juan, the Longest Night, Huaiquimilla, along with co-writer Pablo Greene, brilliantly weaves together themes both grand and intimate, a rich human tapestry played against an urgent social and environmental crisis. Rooted in strong performances and assured direction, Bad Influence is a heartfelt call to arms touching both heart and conscience. Winner Best Chilean Film Award at the Valdivia Film Festival and Audience Award for Best Film at Toulouse Latin America Film Festival.
Arrestado luego de un violento asalto a una gasolinera, un conflictivo joven de Santiago llamado Tano (Andrew Bargsted) es dejado en libertad bajo la custodia de su padre, Javier (Francisco Pérez-Bannen), mecánico de automóviles que vive en Wallmapu, un pequeño pueblito en las montañas. Pronto el joven rebelde traba amistad con Cheo (Eliseo Fernández), un tímido y extraño integrante de la comunidad Mapuche en lucha contra el desplazamiento y destrucción causados por una enorme planta de pulpa. La conexión entre los dos jóvenes rápidamente se profundiza frente a la crueldad del patio escolar y la difícil vida doméstica de ambos, obligándolos a reconsiderar la relación entre si y con el mundo que los rodea en este extraordinario largometraje debut de la escritora y directora Claudia Huaiquimilla.
Luego de su premiado corto “San Juan, la noche más larga”, Huaiquimilla, escribiendo con Pablo Greene, relata en forma brillante, con temas al mismo tiempo íntimos y grandiosos, un rico entramado con el trasfondo de una crisis medioambiental y social urgente. Basado en actuaciones sólidas y una dirección segura, Mala Junta es un apasionado llamado a las armas que apela tanto a la conciencia como al corazón. Ganó el premio al mejor largometraje chileno en el Festival de Cine de Valdivia y el premio del público a la mejor película en el Festival de Cine Latinoamericano de Toulouse.
