Description

“This movie really brings some gobsmackingly weird and outrageous spectacle, with moments of pure showstopping freakiness…it sets out to make your jaw drop. And it succeeds.” -The Guardian

“The Square is darkly amusing, but it’s also bracingly honest in its absurdity, and that’s what kept me coming back to each one of its wonderfully knotty scenarios even months after seeing it.” - David Sims, The Atlantic

“The art world’s always been easy to drag, what with its interiority, weirdos, and frustrating games of pin-the-tail-on-the-thesis. But rarely are these ideas lampooned so beautifully.” - Blake Goble, Consequence of Sound

GOLDEN GLOBE NOMINEE: Best Motion Picture - Foreign Language
CANNES FILM FESTIVAL WINNER - Palme d'Or
EUROPEAN FILM AWARDS WINNER: Best Film, Best Actor

Directed by the acclaimed director of Force Majeure (2014) and winner of the Palme d'Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, The Square introduces us to Christian, the respected curator of a contemporary art museum, a divorced but devoted father of two who drives an electric car and supports good causes. His next show is “The Square”, an installation which invites passersby to altruism, reminding them of their role as responsible fellow human beings. But sometimes, it is difficult to live up to your own ideals: Christian’s foolish response to the theft of his phone drags him into shameful situations. Meanwhile, the museum's PR agency has created an unexpected campaign for ”The Square”. The response is overblown and sends Christian, as well as the museum, into an existential crisis.
