An engrossing portrait of a fierce love unbroken by the forces of bigotry and hate, director Cristina Herrera Borquez’s rousing debut feature follows Victor and Fernando, an unassuming Baja California couple who, in 2013, unwittingly found themselves in the center of a social firestorm over their simple desire to be married. Weighing all their options, including having the ceremony performed in Mexico City (where same-sex marriage was made legal in 2010), the pair instead opted to stay in their hometown of Mexicali, whose governor and mayor defied the Mexico Supreme Court ruling, in order to fight for their most basic of rights. This set off a series of increasingly absurd roadblocks by the local government and galvanized legions of supporters and detractors alike.
Aided by a pair of committed attorneys and strengthened by backgrounds shaped by struggle and poverty, Victor and Fernando withstand a seemingly never-ending series of bizarre hurdles and bureaucratic nitpicking with grace and dignity, culminating in one of the most unexpected and emotional wedding ceremonies ever captured on film. Atractivo relato de un sólido amor que la intolerancia y el odio no logran romper, este apasionante largometraje debut de la directora Cristina Herrera Borquez sigue a Víctor y Fernando, una sencilla pareja de Baja California que en el 2013, sin proponérselo, se convierte en ojo de un huracán social por su simple deseo de casarse. Sopesando todas sus opciones, incluida la de tener una ceremonia en la Ciudad de México (donde el matrimonio entre personas del mismo sexo es legal desde el 2010) la pareja decide en cambio quedarse en su Mexicali natal, cuyo gobernador y alcalde desafiaron el fallo de la Suprema Corte de Justica de México, para luchar por sus derechos mas elementales. Esto desencadena el despliegue de una serie de obstáculos cada vez más absurdos por parte del gobierno local, y galvaniza legiones tanto de defensores como de enemigos.
