Be prepared to fall in love with the spry and humble Bruno Bozzetto, one of Italy’s most popular and influential animators. In Marco Bonfanti’s warm-hearted, intimate documentary BOZZETTO NON TROPPO, the engaging Bozzetto—best-known for the 1976 FANTASIA-inspired ALLEGRO NON TROPPO—unfurls a welcome mat that invites us to observe every facet of his life. And what an engaging and vibrant world we enter; from hanging out with him at his kooky rural family home that is enlivened by a menagerie of animals Dr. Dolittle would covet to accompanying him as he visits his hip urban Milan studio and his team of dedicated animators. We also journey with Bozzetto to Pixar in Emeryville, and to San Francisco’s Walt Disney Family Museum as he tours an exhibit dedicated to his work. But what makes this upbeat documentary so special—in addition to the presence of Bozzetto himself—is the effortless way director Bonfanti illustrates how events and observances from a creative filmmaker’s life shape and influence what later appears on screen. –
