Screened to great acclaim at the Venice Film Festival, FRANCA: CHAOS AND CREATION is a documentary tribute to Franca Sozzani, the late, groundbreaking editor of Italian Vogue. Her son, director Francesco Carrozzini, creates an intimate portrait of his iconoclastic mother, who died in December 2016, and was a trailblazer in the fashion world. Sozzani was known for her willingness to embrace new styles, championing models of color, and for giving photographers creative control. She was also committed to exploring taboo subjects, in order to shake up the status quo and redefine the concept of beauty. From the ridiculous to the sublime, her astonishing and sometimes controversial magazine covers often broke the rules and set the bar high for fashion. At the time of her death, Matthew Schneier of the New York Times wrote, “Franca Sozzani, under whose 28-year direction Italian Vogue reigned as a daring and often impious iconoclast ... nurtured the careers of those who would become the most important fashion photographers of a generation, among them Peter Lindbergh, Paolo Roversi, Bruce Weber, and especially Steven Meisel.” This love letter from a son to his mother also features interviews with Karl Lagerfeld, Baz Luhrmann, and Courtney Love. –
