The third selection of our third season is a fitting pairing for our series on wine and truth. 42 Grams is sensory-indulging culinary cinema. The film combines a vérité main course portrait of a headstrong restauranteur with palate-cleansing sides of mouth-watering victual vignettes.

The Vino Vérité series features talented new voices and established filmmakers influenced by the vérité tradition in person to present their thought-provoking, chance-taking, and visually-arresting films. Each selection is paired with hand-selected wines from Bread Garden Market.

Tickets: $25 public / $20 for members. Includes wine tasting, film, hors d'oeuvres and filmmaker reception.

An intimate portrait of a complicated chef taking an unconventional road to stardom, 42 Grams centers on Jake Bickelhaupt, a culinary genius from a hardscrabble home in pursuit of a Michelin star.

After working at some of the world’s best restaurants, Jake’s aggressive personality keeps him from finding a kitchen to call home. As a chef without a restaurant, Jake begins cooking fifteen-course menus out of his Chicago apartment. Alongside his dedicated wife Alexa, their “underground restaurant"—where dirty dishes soak in the bedroom—becomes a foodie hot spot and they soon make the jump to renovating an abandoned chicken joint to open a real restaurant, 42 Grams.

The tightly wound film mirrors Jakes never-stop motor and Newell's camera captures the pair as they invent eye-popping food, struggle with the overwhelming workload, and try to maintain a marriage. From savoring the highs to stomaching the lows, 42 Grams serves up one couple's pursuit of the American Dream.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Jack C. Newell is an award-winning filmmaker and public artist whose work has been experienced worldwide. He is in post-production on the documentary series, How to Build a School in Haiti, that focuses on the construction of a single elementary school in rural Haiti to try to understand how we can win the fight against global poverty. His previous narrative feature films are Hope Springs Eternal, Open Tables and Close Quarters. He is in development and pre-production on a number of other projects. Jack is the Program Director of The Harold Ramis Film School at The Second City, the co-creator of Destroy Your Art, and the co-creator of the public art project, The Wabash Lights.
