The fourth selection of our third season is a revealing look at dancer Bobbi Jene Smith, an Iowa native out to experience the world. Vulnerable, erotic and intensely personal, ths film is an appreciation for a woman risking it all.

The Vino Vérité series features talented new voices and established filmmakers influenced by the vérité tradition in person to present their thought-provoking, chance-taking, and visually-arresting films. Each selection is paired with hand-selected wines from Bread Garden Market.

Dancer Bobbi Jene Smith, born in Iowa, has spent 10 years as the star of famous Israeli dance company Batsheva, under the tutelage of renowned choreographer Ohad Naharin (aka Mr. Gaga), who radically shaped her personal life and professional work.

In her thirties, a time of transition for many dancers, she makes the difficult and life-altering decision to uproot her life and career to move back to the US. The life-changing decision to leave is made all the more difficult considering her budding relationship with a charismatic young dancer, Or Schraiber.

With a conviction to turn vulnerabilities into strength, Bobbi uses the long separation from her home country as inspiration for fresh ideas, starting work on a solo choreography. This groundbreaking new piece is emotionally and physically revealing in a way Bobbi Jene sees as liberating.

Using a fly-on-the-wall approach, director Elvira Lind discovers incredible intimacy in the most revealing moments of Bobbi's momentous year. Through patient, mesmerizing dance, and raw, personal moments, Bobbi Jene allows us into her life with unforgettable honesty.

ABOUT BOBBI JENE SMITH

Born in Centerville, Iowa. From 2005-2014 she was a member of the Batsheva Dance Company under the artistic direction of Ohad Naharin. She is an alumnus of the Juilliard School, North Carolina School of the Arts, and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School. Her choreography and solo work has been presented by The Batsheva Dance Company, PS122 COIL Festival, A.R.T, The Israel Museum, Luminato Festival, The Wild Project, Machol Shalem, Sacramento Ballet, The CCA, The San Francisco Conservatory of Dance, UArts, NYU, and The Juilliard School. She has worked in Punchdrunk's production of Sleep No More as well as "Dido and Aeneas" and "Orphic Moment" choreographed by Zack Winokur. Her film and video work include, “Annihilation” directed by Alex Garland, “MA” directed by Celia Rowlson-Hall, and “Yossi” directed by Eytan Fox. The documentary "Bobbi Jene" swept the Tribeca Film Festival, winning best documentary, best cinematography, and best editing in 2017. Bobbi has been a certified GAGA teacher for the past 13 years and has taught Ohad Naharin's repertory in schools and universities around the world.
