A U.S. diplomat flees Lebanon in 1972 after a terrorist attack at his opulent home. Ten years later, he’s a struggling alcoholic and earning a living as a labor dispute mediator, when he is contacted by CIA operatives to return to war-torn Beirut to help with a hostage negotiation. Jon Hamm (Mad Men) steps back into the role of the expert negotiator and Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) plays the undercover operative that assists him. Director Brad Anderson has crafted an intelligent and entertaining political thriller from a resurrected script that Tony Gilroy (Bourne Legacy) wrote in 1991 which was loosely inspired by the true 1984 kidnapping of CIA Station Chief William Buckley. Fresh off of its premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Beirut is an exciting kick-off for the Annapolis Film Festival as we welcome the film’s producer Monica Levinson back home to Maryland for a post-screening conversation.
