A once-acclaimed New York playwright begrudgingly moves in with his widowed father in his New Jersey retirement golf community, where he ends up directing a senior-citizen theater troupe in a musical. Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords) plays Nate, the down-on-his-luck son struggling with writer’s block, and Elliott Gould plays his father Bob, who constantly tells jokes to deal with all of life’s challenges. Rounding out the stellar cast is Priscilla Lopez, Bob’s new girlfriend who is sympathetic to Nate’s plight, and Annie Potts, a neighbor who wants to set up Nate with her daughter, played by singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson (who’s song Be Okay charmingly accompanies a key montage in the film.) In the vein of the best self-analytical, self-deprecating, self-improvement mid-life crisis comedies this film is full of heart, humor, and healing.
