In Swaziland, a teacher asks her class of orphaned students to collaborate on writing a fictional story, as a way to process their own memories and traumas. Dazzling illustrations bring to life their imaginative story, which follows a young Swazi girl named Liyana and her perilous quest to find her kidnapped brothers. Observational footage of the orphans’ home-life reveals the real-world inspirations that become elements in their story. It’s a unique and poetic way to reflect on some of the issues facing the people of this tiny country that has the highest HIV infection rate in the world, leaving an estimated 200,000 children orphaned.
