From director Hong Sang-soo comes this contemplative drama of forbidden love, identity and the reconciliation of loss. This is the story of Younghe, an actress whose romantic life has led her down a road of uncertainty. When we meet her, she has found herself overwhelmed by the stress of an affair with a married man. Escaping the spotlight of South Korea for the streets of Germany, Younghe considers her situation alongside a female friend and wonders where her life is going next.

A film of self-reflection and critique, On the Beach at Night Alone is inspired by Hong Sang-soo’s relationship with actress Kim Min-hee (who plays the lead role) and acts as both a drama and a confession. Eventually, Younghe finds herself mirroring the film’s title, her loneliness nurtured by a single, pressing question: does her out-of-reach lover miss her in the same way she misses him?

Hong Sang-soo Hong Sang-soo made his directorial debut at 35 with his film The Day A Pig Fell Into The Well (‘96) and now has over 20 feature films to his name. With a career spanning over two decades, Hong Sang-soo’s films have screened at a variety of festivals, including Cannes, the Berlinale and the Venice Film Festival.
