In a rural Indian village in Assam, a young girl named Dhunu (played by Bhanita Das) dreams of being a rockstar, a wish that inspires ridicule from other villagers. Spirited and determined, Dhunu begins saving for an electric guitar and resolves to will her dream into life through sheer positivity despite impossible circumstances. Through public criticism and the constant fear that her dream may be too far away, Dhunu’s relentless spirit works to prove the naysayers wrong and become a true musician.
The cast, composed of non-actors from Das’ home village, brings an unfiltered air to the film that proves essential when Dhunu’s dream is at risk of being derailed by a very real development–approaching adulthood. Village Rockstars hinges on Das’ heartfelt performance as a girl who will fight to keep her dream alive, even as societal frameworks close in on her as she moves closer to womanhood.
