Codirectors Tran Buu Loc and Kay Nguyen showcase Saigon’s history through the transformative world of fashion in The Tailor, a vibrant reflection on both the past and the present. In 1969 Saigon, renowned dressmaker Thanh Mai harbors hopes for her daughter Nhu Yu to take over the family dressmaking shop. While Thanh Mai’s fashions are in keeping with Ao Dai traditions, Nhu Yu, has her own ideas and is set on western fashions and new trends, resulting in a clash between mother and daughter.
But a large dose of perspective comes Nhu Yu’s way when she is suddenly transported to the present day, and her mother’s dress shop is in ruins. Can Nhu Yu save her family’s business by way of the future? Can she mend the personal and professional wounds 48 years later? Nhu Yu is about to learn the importance of tradition in the hardscrabble world of 21st century fashion.
Tran Buu Loc has worked as a producer on several projects, while Kay Nguyen wrote the script for The Tailor (‘17). Together, the directing duo’s creative partnership has led to a marvelously woven feature-film debut that has been hailed as a Vietnamese The Devil Wears Prada.
