A contemplative take on the zombie apocalypse, Robin Aubert’s horror film Les Affamés is not your average gore fest. Concerned with capturing the darkest reaches of the human experience, Aubert does not rely on the shock factor familiar to the popular, and some would argue overspent, genre. Set in a haunting village, a group of survivors faces a dismal future, the zombies that surround them a constant reflection of what has been lost.
Of course, there are familiar faces—the survivor, the zombie hunter, the teenagers. But what sets Les Affamés apart is its near constant attention to both humanity and the dreaded loss of it. Our heroes are either fully aware, or learn, that the world they’ve known is gone. What’s left is a fight not only for survival, but to retain the last gasp of hope that exists within an embittered landscape.
Director Biography
Canadian-born Robin Aubert is a diversely talented actor, writer and director. His work includes Saint Martyrs of the Damned (’05), Tuktuq (’16) and several short and television projects. His latest, Les affamés, earned the Best Canadian Film award at the Toronto International Film Fest.
