A marvelous portrait of a leading voice in literature, women’s rights and academia, Natalia Beristain’s The Eternal Feminine follows the life of Rosario Castellano, including her rise to prominence and marriage to fellow academic Ricardo Guerra.
In 1950s Mexico City, a young Rosario is beginning the road to her eventual destiny as one of Mexico’s leading writers. In college, she meets and falls in love with Guerra, each attracted to the other’s intellect. Their stormy relationship crosses decades, equally propelled and repelled by their strong personalities, driven by intellect, arrogance, creativity and passion. But their differences in opinion on the extent of women’s rights, especially in their private life, threatens to pull them apart permanently. Caught between traditional gender roles and the promise to grow beyond them, Castellano’s journey as both writer and woman is ultimately one of triumph, but as the women’s rights debate continues half a century later, that triumph is still being won.
