A tender and moving story brought to life through friendship, Felipe Barbosa’s Gabriel and the Mountain traces with a heartfelt gaze the African journey of his friend Gabriel Buchmann, who died in 2009 on Mount Mulanje.
Gabriel, played by João Pedro Zappa, calls himself a “traveler” and is determined to discover all the beauty the world has to offer. Along the way, he joins up with his girlfriend Cristina, showing the complications in their relationship due to Gabriel's free spirit.
Barbosa’s re-imagining of Gabriel is that of a spirited man who longs to blend in wherever he goes, taking in sceneries and cultures as they come. Despite their friendship, Barbosa does not excuse Gabriel from contradiction, and also leaves room to comment on the nature of privilege when abroad.
Director Biography
Fellipe Barbosa is a writer and director. Born in 1980 in Rio de Janeiro, he is known for his work in both short and feature documentary film. His credits include Gabriel and the Mountain, Casa Grande (’14) and Salt Kiss (’07).
