Description

Special Guest Narcissister Attending April 23

Brooklyn-based artist and performer Narcissister takes the stage, plumbing the depths of identity, sexuality, race and death in this breathtaking feature film debut based on her Bessie Award nominated performance of the same name. The film’s centerpiece is a mesmerizing performance in which Narcissister, sitting down to a meal at a metaphorical restaurant, first eats some spinach leaves, then, unsatisfied, moves on to the restaurant’s furniture before eventually turning her attention—quite literally—inward from there. Arresting animations from artist Martha Colburn support Narcissister’s explorations, unveiling the true heart of the performance—the illness, death, and lasting influence of Narcissister’s mother.

A marvelous and multi-layered hybrid performance film/documentary, Narcissister Organ Player employs its central figure’s evocative physicality to explore the universal themes of being human. The film, and most importantly Narcissister herself, is both a confrontation of spectacle and a reflection on the personal, leaving audiences with food for thought long after this mythical restaurant closes its kitchen.
