In the 1950s, Mária fled Communist Hungary for Vienna. But now she’s an obstinate, independent senior, once again living in Budapest. When she falls ill, her daughter Olga comes to care for her. At the same time, Olga tries to piece together the long-buried secrets of her mother’s past.
The Hungarian auteur Márta Mészáros is well-known to longtime patrons of MSPIFF. Under Al Milgrom, the U Film Society championed her Adoption (Golden Bear, Berlinale 1975), Nine Months (Prix FIPRESCI, Cannes 1977) and Diary For My Children (Grand Prix Special du Jury, Cannes 1984). With Aurora Borealis, Mészáros once again examines a social taboo, this time exploring the story of children fathered by occupying Russian soldiers. The fine international cast includes the iconic performer Mari Törocsik as Mária, alongside Ildikó Tóth and Franciska Törocsik.
