The friendship of a group of young women is put to the test in Rojda Sekersöz's brazen film debut, Beyond Dreams. After the strong-willed Mirja is released from prison, she returns to her old life, where her sickly mother and younger sister look to her for support and her group of friends long to bring her back into the fold. Torn between two families, Mirja attempts to shape herself into the provider that her blood relatives’ need, but still finds herself longing for the support of her makeshift sisterhood.
A powerful look at the bonds shared between women, Beyond Dreams explores the universal journey of crafting an identity from both what you want to be and what your community expects from you. At its heart, the film makes audiences ask: can you choose your family?
