Special Guest Olivier Meys Attending April 19 + 20
Unsure if her life in the Dongbei region of China is enough when compared to the prospects of the modern world, Lina decides to head for Paris, France on the promise of a lucrative job as a nanny. While her husband doesn’t agree with her decision to leave, he supports her nonetheless. When she arrives in Paris, the job isn’t there, and Lina finds herself swept into the city’s prostitution circles. Starving and alone, Lina eventually meets Li Yumei, who offers her shelter with a group of women all making a living as prostitutes.
A startling look at the reality of broken promises and a woman’s journey to salvage what is left, Bitter Flowers refrains from placing judgement on Lina or Li Yumei, instead focusing on the unforgiving realities that have shaped their choices. From filmmaker Oliver Meys, this simmering drama is a multinational production between Belgium, Switzerland, France and China.
