Description

Director Jakob Preuss Attending April 17 + 18

A moving documentary about perseverance, When Paul Came Over the Sea is set in an unsettled political sphere and charts the friendship between the filmmaker, Jakob Preuss, and Paul, a migrant from Cameroon. As Jakob and Paul cross paths at various points along Paul’s passage, we bare witness to both the humanity and inhumanity that Paul faces.

Paul’s journey is a harrowing one—he successfully crosses the border into Spain, but it’s a journey that took 50 hours and resulted in the loss of half of his group. When he finally reaches Spain, the trauma of his journey is ignored and he is instead shuffled into an immigration detention center. After yet another ordeal, he again crosses paths with Jakob at the Red Cross Center in Granada. Through these hardships, Paul’s resilience and hope for the future keep him going, and the friendship between him and Jakob proves a powerful foundation for them both.
