Description

Due to weather, the April 14, 9:45pm screening of The Whiskey Bandit at St. Anthony Main Theatre has been postponed. New screening date/time: May 3 at 4:30pm.

The high-octane biopic The Whiskey Bandit is the latest from Nimród Antal, the Magyar talent behind the arthouse hit Kontroll. It offers a gripping account of the so-called gentleman outlaw Attila Ambrus, his country’s most wanted bank robber. During the blossoming of newly capitalist Hungary between 1993 and 1999, he robbed 29 financial institutions in Budapest and became a folk hero by masterminding the most outrageous domestic crime spree ever seen.

Known for his daring raids and outrageous style (he presented the female bank clerks with flowers and sent gifts of wine to his bumbling police pursuers), Ambrus started life as a poor boy in Transylvania. He spent most of his childhood the victim of bullying in juvenile detention and dreaming of a better life across the border. When he finally makes it to Budapest, Attila joins a professional hockey team, but quickly turns to robbery to support his newfound extravagant lifestyle, evading the law at every turn.
