The remote Pacific Island nation of Kiribati is home to over 100,000 citizens. In this documentary from Matthieu Rytz, we meet the President of Kiribati, Anote Tong. Anote is dedicated to preserving the legacy of Kiribati and its people, including their safety, but this commitment is facing an inevitable threat—the rising sea level. With a huge environmental change on the way, some Kiribati residents are seeking greater stability overseas, including a woman named Sermary, whose journey to New Zealand is also movingly depicted.
As time runs out, we follow Anote, Sermary and her family, and other Kiribati citizens as they confront the future, one that is uncertain, harrowing and filled with complications such as the shifting state of human rights negotiations and the political climate.
