The Book of Clarence charts the life and career of Grammy Award-winning singer Clarence Fountain, who founded the Blind Boys of Alabama along with Jimmy Carter, Velma Bozman Traylor, Olice Thomas, George Scott, J.T. Hutton and Johnny Fields. The legendary blind Gospel singer accomplished a slew of rare feats throughout his life. He won five Grammys, appeared on Broadway and spent 60 years touring.
His life was an extraordinary one, and The Book of Clarence presents imagery of Fountain through a tender and moving perspective. A collection of interviews, live performances and living-room conversations create an atmosphere of serenity, with the undercurrent of Fountain’s kidney dialysis adding insight into the musician’s health. First singing together in a school chorus in 1939, Clarence and the rest of the Blind Boys of Alabama have not only made music history, but serve as shining examples of the transcendent power of music.
Director Biography
Lee Breuer was born in 1939 and is a multi-talented director, playwright, poet and educator. He co-founded the Mabou Mines Theater Company in New York, and produced the Broadway show Gospel at Colonus in 1983, in which Clarence Fountain and the Blind Boys of Alabama starred.
