Description

“If I can’t achieve justice for myself, I can’t achieve justice for others.” Judge Kholoud Al-Faqih’s words pierce through the screen as she reflects on the challenges that come with her truly unique position. In Erika Cohn’s new documentary, Al-Faqih becomes the first woman to be appointed as a judge in the Muslim Shari’a courts in the Middle East.

Facing an uphill battle, we follow Al-Faqih as she advocates for women’s rights and fights for her own place in the courts. While her achievements are nothing short of incredible, Al-Faqih’s story echoes the voices of populations of women who have been limited to particular societal roles that now reflect on the inconsistencies of modern times. Throughout The Judge, Al-Faqih questions and combats the traditions that have kept those before her from achieving their goals, and in many cases from justice itself.
