In the documentary feature So Help Me God, Brussels-based judge Anne Gruwez has seen it all. From the heartbreaking to the humorous, her life is surrounded by a revolving door of stories. The work is diverse and often harrowing—she flits from crime scenes to questionings, confronting harsh realities on a daily basis. What makes Gruwez stand out as the subject of this doc is not only her ability to stay afloat through the chaos, but her audacious and outspoken character that allows her to take on cases no matter how gritty the details.
Directors Jean Libon and Yves Hinant make sure to keep the focus on Gruwez. There is no music or voice-overs to accompany her as she goes from crime scene to courtroom. What we are left with is a compelling character study that, like Gruwez herself, bravely tackles the full range of the human experience.
