"Jaw-droppingly funny, crazy, moving, and indelibly authentic." - Variety

Winner, SXSW Film Festival Grand Jury Award - Narrative Feature

Art House Theater Day is a special event for cinemas like FilmScene. For one day, art house theaters around the country present a selection of cherry picked films that represent some of the best of what we show on our screens year round. One of this year's films is a sneak peek at the highly anticipated Thunder Road, directed by Jim Cummings.

Based on his 2016 award-winning short film of the same name (one of the best American short films I've seen in years, watch it here), the feature length adaptation follows Officer Arnaud (played by Cummings) in the days after his mother's funeral. Thunder Road is an authentic and genuine portrait of the raw and real emotions - anger, sadness, even joy - we feel in times of grief. It's funny, it's heartbreaking, it's the introduction of an exciting new voice.

In two short years, Cummings went from being an unknown struggling filmmaker working freelance gigs, to an artist being compared to Richard Linklater. It's that kind of scrappy, dogged determination and passion for film that makes Thunder Road a perfect title for Art House Theater Day, as it exemplifies the spirit of indie filmmakers who so often fin their first (and best) home at art house cinemas. - Rebecca Fons, FilmScene Programming Director
