Ryan Gosling, a specialist at portraying loners and outsiders, once again takes on the role of the oddball in his depiction of a delusional young man who begins an unconventional relationship with a doll he finds on the internet.

A shy and awkward young man, Lars (Ryan Gosling), avoids social interaction at all costs. Lars lives in a small Wisconsin town with his brother, Gus (Paul Schneider), and his sister-in-law, Karin (Emily Mortimer). When one day Lars announces that he would like to introduce his family to a woman he met on the internet; their excitement turns to shock when this woman turns out to be a life-sized anatomically-correct sex-doll known as a RealDoll. It turns out Lars isn’t interested in using the doll for sex, instead he is searching for the type of connection that he hasn’t been able to find in typical human interactions. (USA, 2007, 106 min., PG-13, English |Craig Gillespie)
