Vino Vérité event:
DIALOGUE: Director Janet van den Brand in person from Belgium!
Sunday, December 2, 7pm

The sixth selection of our third season is cinema poetry, a rich visual and sonorous ode to an agrarian lifestyle that is so close to us here in Iowa City, but is becoming increasingly distant - a vision from Belgium that is a beautiful reminder of our own local heritage.

The Vino Vérité series features talented new voices and established filmmakers influenced by the vérité tradition in person to present their thought-provoking, chance-taking, and visually-arresting films. Each selection is paired with hand-selected wines from Bread Garden Market.

Tickets: $25 public / $20 for members. Includes wine tasting, film, hors d'oeuvres and filmmaker reception.

6:30 Hors d'oeuvres & wine tasting
7:00 Theater open for seating
7:15 Screening
8:30 Q&A + Reception with filmmaker, wine and dessert

ABOUT CERES

"An immersive cinematic experience. The cinematography is impeccable, and the sound design is up there with the best I have experienced in blockbuster fiction. This is her first film, and I cannot wait to see what she creates next." — Screen Anarchy

"A creative documentary. With agriculture depicted as a divinity, whispering poems about spring, Janet van den Brand drew an exceptionally profound picture of the four young kids' lives." — View of the Arts

"Ceres manages to create an atmosphere that enhances the beauty of nature in all its forms. A very accomplished poetic-realistic blend that highlights a beautiful sense of frame and some wonderful musical atmosphere, thanks to a clearly very talented filmmaker." — Cineuropa

"An experiment, an innovation, an attempt to change the stereotypes and make people think differently. I saw things that I had never seen in my life before." — Modern Times

In Roman mythology, Ceres taught man the art of cultivating the soil. Considered the goddess of agriculture, fertility and crops, the Romans willingly sacrificed pigs to her during annual processions around the fields. It is precisely with a Hymn to Ceres - composed in the 11th century - and the image of a new-born piglet, that Janet van den Brand begins the film in which she is going to roam, with a tactile camera, in the company of her protagonists, the natural cycle of life - and death - in the farms of the southern Netherlands. Koen, Daan, Sven and Jeanine are each destined to take over their respective family holdings one day: only ten years old, they have to involve all of their senses in order to touch, feel, listen to and understand an environment that they will transform in the near future. With a background in fiction, the young Belgian filmmaker composes, in Ceres, a fictional documentary ode to those who still dream, as only children can, of the ancestral art of producing food from the earth.
