Vanguard Voices series:

THE THIRD WIFE
Monday, March 4 at 6pm

In 19th century rural Vietnam, 14-year-old May becomes the third wife of wealthy landowner Hung. Soon she learns that she can only gain status by asserting herself as a woman who can give birth to a male child. May's hope to change her status turns into a real and tantalizing possibility when she gets pregnant. Faced with forbidden love and its devestating consequences, May finally comes to an understanding of the brutal truth: the options available for her are few and far between.

RAFIKI
Monday, March 11 at 6pm

Bursting with the colorful street style and music of Nairobi's vibrant youth culture, Rafiki is a tender love story between two young women in a country that still criminalizes homosexuality. Kena and Ziki have long been told that "good Kenyan girls become good Kenyan wives" - but they yearn for something more. Despite the political rivalry between their families, the girls encourage each other to pursue their dreams in a conservative society. When love blossoms between them, Kena and Ziki must choose between happiness and safety. Initially banned in Kenya for its positive portrayal of queer romance, Rafiki won a landmark supreme court case chipping away at Kenya anti-LGBT legislation.

THE CHAMBERMAID
Monday, March 18 at 6pm

A young maid at a luxurious Mexico City hotel confronts the monotony of long workdays with quiet examinations of forgotten belongings and budding friendships that nourish her newfound and determined dream for a better life.

LITTLE WOODS
Monday, March 25 at 6pm

Little Woods, North Dakota, a fracking boomtown well beyond its prime. Ollie (Tessa Thompson) is trying to survive the last few days of her probation after getting caught illegally running prescription drugs over the Canadian border. But when her mother dies, she is thrust back into the life of her estranged sister (Lily James), who is facing her own crisis with an unplanned pregnancy and a deadbeat ex. The two find they have one week to settle the mortgage on their mother's house or face foreclosure. As bills and pressures mount, Ollie faces a choice: whether to return to a way of life she thought she'd left behind for just one more score or to leave it all behind.
