Description

Set in Vienna, Austria, during the pre-war 1930s, a young man pursues the girl of his dreams and seeks the advice of Sigmund Freud (played by the late great Bruno Ganz), even as the foreboding influence of fascism starts to take root. The tobacco shop that caters to patron’s desires and sells forbidden pleasures becomes the last bastion of freedom as the Nazi nightmare rapidly takes hold of the city. This sensual, whimsical and bittersweet coming-of-age story is exquisitely filmed in the style of a dreamy adult Grimm fairy tale. Based on the international bestseller by Robert Seethaler, this cinematic masterpiece is reminiscent of Federico Fellini, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, and Peter Greenaway, captivating in its lush, enveloping beauty. Cast: Simon Morzé, Bruno Ganz, Emma Drogunova, Johannes Krisch, Regina Fritsch. (Austria/Germany, 2018, 94 min., Drama/Romance)
