Description

Love, faith, and civil rights collide in the south as evangelical Christians and drag queens step into the spotlight to explore the meaning of belief through gospel drag shows and passion plays. The Arkansas town of Eureka Springs is the site of the seven-stories tall “Christ of the Ozarks” statue which towers over the grounds of “The Great Passion Play.” With one of the highest per-capita gay populations, the town is embroiled in an epic battle to pass a municipal law that would protect the LGBT citizens and visitors from discrimination. As the vote for City Ordinance 2223 races towards its decision, the film poetically explores the surreal atmosphere of a town with extraordinarily stark contrasts and conflicting opinions. With their hopeful film, Donal Mosher and Michael Palmieri present a miraculous vision of a Southern Utopia where two divergent populations can co-exist peacefully and where religious-themed attractions and diversity festivals compete for tourist dollars.
