In 19th century Vietnam, fourteen-year-old May is married off to a rich landowner, becoming his third wife. Hopeful for a male heir that his first two wives have yet to produce, the husband pampers May and she soon becomes pregnant. But as May becomes more familiar with her new family, including the other two wives, secrets are exposed and emotions run high, propelling May into an unfamiliar world that she is unable to navigate. Befriending the eldest wife for guidance, May embarks upon a difficult journey into adulthood. Ash Mayfair's directorial debut exposes the bitter (and not so distant) realities of being a woman in an unforgiving patriarchal society, and does so with vivid poignancy and compassion.
