Naomi Kawase's latest feature is a vivid exploration of one woman's dreams, the nature surrounding her in the present day, and the ghosts of her past. French travel-writer Jeanne (Juliette Binoche) arrives in Japan in search of a mystical herb known as "vision" that releases its spores every 997 years and is said to cure pain. She enlists the help of Tomo (Masatoshi Nagase), a local naturalist, who offers her a place to stay as well as emotional comfort in a quest that is far more personal and traumatic than anyone might suspect. As Jeanne embarks on her search in the Yoshino mountains, she is haunted and perhaps compelled by her own past trials and heartbreak. But the call of the "vision" is strong, and as director Kawase deftly blends reality and dreams together, Jeanne's purpose for coming to the woods takes mystical proportions.
Director Biography
Naomi Kawase was born on May 30th, 1969 in Nara, Japan. Her work spans over three decades and includes numerous award-winning and nominated documentaries and narrative features, often and expertly blurring the lines between fiction and non-fiction. Vision is her tenth feature film.
