Director Miranda de Pencier and Executive Producer Jake Steinfeld Attending!
When first-time teacher Russ Shepherd comes to Kugluktuk, he brings preconceived notions about northern life and more than a little hubris about his self-imposed mission to bring about change. In this small Arctic town struggling with the highest suicide rate in North America, he hastily assembles an after-school Lacrosse team, which soon becomes the lightning rod for the community's differing views on its future. An interconnected chain of dramatic incidents, and some quieter cross-cultural corrections, lead Russ to understand that education is a two-way street.
Drawn from a true story, The Grizzlies is seeded with unassailable authenticity because of its dramatic location, and driven by remarkable performances from the young Nunavut cast. The Grizzlies is much more than the usual triumph through sports story, and one of the most inspiring and unexpectedly affirming films of the year.
