From the visionary creator of the animated feature Sita Sings the Blues, comes a daringly animated, musical feature that loosely follows the Passover Seder story. Filmmaker Nina Paley interweaves an interview with her father and adds a few twists to Biblical tales, such as a female Goddess who confronts the adversarial powers of the patriarchy. Including reinvisioned and interlocking narratives of the Book of Exodus, this epic cinematic feature blends the lines between the real and the fantastic, the biblical and the supernatural. While the story itself is a spectacular feat of animation and moving art, the behind-the-scenes tale is just as impressive. A one-woman force, Paley wrote and animated the film herself, working with a budget of $20,000. Viewing the film as a true labor of love, Paley released Seder-Masochism into the Public Domain in 2019.
