The story of Laila Haidari is brought to the screen in this riveting documentary from Elizabeth and Gulistan Mirzaei, the first full-length feature from this married filmmaking duo. Having endured a cruel upbringing and being married as a mere child, Laila now leads the charge against another threat--the heroin addiction crisis facing Afghanistan. As the founder of a groundbreaking addiction treatment center and restaurant, Laila is determined to do everything in her power to help those in need. Her restaurant is staffed by recovering addicts, providing an essential opportunity for people who would otherwise be facing a future with little or no options. A story of heroism against impossible odds, Laila's work faces ongoing threats from outside forces, including political unrest in the country, government oppression, and an evolving Afghan society. Still, she presses on, her work itself a passionate demonstration of willpower and love.
Director Biography
Filmmakers Elizabeth and Gulistan Mirzaei have worked together on numerous short and documentary projects. Together, they are not only directors, but also editors, writers and producers. Laila at the Bridge is their first collaborative full-length feature.
