This stunning feature from director Alejandra Márquez Abella highlights the stark reality of Mexico's financial crisis of 1982 and its effect on the upper middle class through the eyes of a couple, Sofia and Fernando. Sofia (beautifully portrayed by Ilses Sala) serves as the audiences primary vantage point and protagonist, her life carefully curated with signs of wealth--a luxurious home, servants to care for it and a prime reputation as a socialite. But when the foundations of Fernando's inherited wealth start to crumble, Sofia's world slowly disintegrates with it. Throughout the film, Abella uses her careful and honest gaze to showcase the harsh realities of the time period and Sofia's personal situation without passing judgment. Instead, the film is a tender reflection on a woman's journey to true authenticity, the price of happiness and if money can truly buy it.
