Chilean director Dominga Sotomayor Castillo's drama is a dynamic tale of adolescence set in the Chilean summer of 1990 in a rustic community of artists and centered on a trio of young people. Our protagonist is Sofía, a sixteen-year-old girl just beginning to take her first steps toward adulthood. Her friend, Lucas, is several steps behind, and watches with longing as Sofía drifts out of reach. Alongside them, the younger Clara has recently moved to the community with her parents, and struggles to find her place among her peers. A thoughtful coming-of-age tale inspired by Castillo's own childhood living in a rural, alternative community. Too Late To Die Young offers a refreshing and bold story about connection, first loves and the complicated fabric of growing up. The film earned Castillo the Leopard for Best Direction at the Locarno Film Festival.
