High fashion and glamor are the catalysts for an indelible change in the life of a young Sydney woman in the feel-good dramedy Ladies in Black. Set in the summer of 1959, when the impact of European migration and the rise of women's liberation is about to change Australia forever, 16-year-old Lisa takes a summer job at the city's famous department store, Goode's, while awaiting the results of her final school exams. There she meets the "ladies in black" – the stylish Goode's employees. Beguiled and influenced by Magda (Julia Ormond), the vivacious, sophisticated manager of the high-fashion floor, and befriended by fellow sales-ladies Patty and Fay, Lisa grows from a bookish schoolgirl to a positive young woman, and she herself becomes a catalyst for a cultural change in everyone's lives. The latest from Oscar-nominated writer-director Bruce Beresford is a beautifully shot, fashion-lover's delight.
