Director Carlos Reygadas co-stars with his wife, Natalia López, in Our Time, a film that deftly explores the combative themes of masculinity, marriage, jealousy, misplaced passion, and the dissection of the masculine ego. Reygadas plays Juan, a ranch owner and poet living outside Mexico City with his wife Esther (López) and three children. A self-exiled urban bourgeois celebrating an open marriage, Juan is forced to come to terms with his ego when Esther takes up a secret affair with Yankee horse-breaker Phil (Phil Burgers). As Juan finds himself overcome by jealousy despite his own convictions, Esther begins her own journey of discovery and desire, finding herself longing for Phil as perhaps more than an occasional lover. While their time as a couple may be facing its end, Juan and Esther may find that their time as fulfilled individuals may be just beginning.
