Description

A series of misadventures leaves Lukas, an OSCE interpreter on a tour of military checkpoints, stranded near a small southern Ukrainian town in a lawless universe beyond his imagination. With nowhere to turn, this city slicker finds shelter at the home of Vova, a colorful local. Fascinated by his host and his host's daughter Marushka, with whom he is rapidly falling in love, Lukas's contempt for provincial life slowly melts away and sets him on a quest for a happiness he had never known could exist. Visually rich and strange, Volcano evokes Alice in Wonderland by way of Kafka, spiked with elements of a contemporary Western. After his prize-winning documentary Ukrainian Sheriffs, director Bondarchuk, again finds inspiration in the region of his birth. Winner, Audience Award, Pingyao Film Festival; Best Film, Yerevan Film Festival, Split Film Festival.
